Project Based Learning + Human Centred Design: A Collaborative Workshop

In a recent collaborative effort, Lobethal Lutheran School and St Jakobi Lutheran School hosted a workshop focusing on Project Based Learning (PBL) and Human Centred Design. The workshop emphasised empathy as the driving force behind the design framework.

Here are some insightful reflections from the participants:

  • “I used to think PBL always had to have a big project/product to display learning. Now I think that human centred design helps with an empathy element and that the learning should be authentic.”
  • “I used to think broader meant more scope and freedom for students. Now I think defining a problem is important.”
  • “I used to think that public projects need to be big. Now I think they need to be authentic.”
  • “I used to think human centred design was only about making the learning authentic and real life. Now I think it’s about creating an empathy link and making it truly meaningful.”
  • “I used to think about how to cover curriculum. Now I’m focusing more on the learner and the authenticity of the learning.”
  • “I used to think PBL should be connected to real life (situation). Now I think it should be connected to real lives (people).”

This workshop highlighted the transformative potential of combining PBL with Human Centred Design, encouraging educators to create more authentic, empathetic, and meaningful learning experiences where learners are Free to Flourish.
