Vale Mr Robert Paterson

7 July 1928 – 7 February 2026

Former Immanuel College Principal and Old Scholar, Mr Robert Paterson (1947) passed away in February, aged 97.

Rob joined Immanuel in 1942 as a student from Queensland, becoming Head Prefect in 1947, captaining First XVIII football and First XI cricket teams, and setting a triple jump record that stood for 74 years!

Rob became a teacher and worked in the state system, at Immanuel and at Scotch College before serving as Principal of Immanuel College from 1973 to 1983.

In 1994, Rob was ordained as a Lutheran pastor, serving faithfully in New Zealand and assisting congregations to the south of Adelaide until 2016.

Rob’s leadership at Immanuel was marked by Christian compassion and a commitment to excellence. He introduced the College’s House System in 1975, and the Paterson Shield, named after him, continues to be presented to the winning house each year.

To quote Rob speaking to graduating students in 2008: ‘I hope that as you live your lives you will also be able to reflect to others what the name of your school means – Immanuel – the God who is with us. May he go with you.’

His immense contribution to Immanuel College specifically and ongoing legacy to Lutheran Education generally is both acknowledged deeply appreciated.

Rob’s funeral occurred in February and a memorial service commemorating his life of service was conducted at Immanuel College on Wednesday 5th May.
