Hope Through Action – A Christian Response to Global Issues

For the past six years, the Christian Living faculty at Endeavour has partnered with ALWS, a collaboration that began through incursions in our Year 10 and 12 units, with a focus on refugee awareness.

What started as a curriculum support evolved into a vibrant partnership built on a shared vision: encouraging students to look beyond themselves and engage deeply with the world around them.

Rooted in our Mission Statement “A Christian environmentfor staff and students to develop their God-given abilities for LIFE and community”, this partnership has developed into a powerful curriculum initiative. Together, Celia [from ALWS] and I added a purposeful and hands-on component to our Year 12 unit, Giving to Communities. The revised focus brought a rich learning experience, designed to inspire empathy, critical thinking, and action. Over a period of five weeks, students delve into real world challenges such as war, displacement, disability, and gender inequality, through the lens of authentic stories.

In 2024, we launched ‘Relay for Change’, a fundraising event aimed at driving meaningful impact. The event encourages Year 12 students to step into the shoes of others by participating in activities that reflect the daily lives of those in developing countries, such as, making sandals, soccer balls, and constructing shelters, among other lived experiences.

‘Relay for Change’ is more than a fundraiser; it is a call to action. It empowers students to use their talents in service of others, and reminds us all that true community is built when we put others’ needs ahead of our own.

ALWS’ collaboration with Alison Slater at Endeavour College has inspired the development of Challenge for Change, a flexible, issue-based unit for Year 10–12 students. The unit deepens student understanding of global justice issues, allows students to explore how faith informs compassion and advocacy, and equips young people for action, to make a difference in their communities and beyond.
