Christian Studies in Our Learning Communities
Shaping the delivery of Christian Studies to fit the local context provides learners with the best opportunity to be truly engaged with the content. Here are three examples of how LESNW learning communities are implementing the CSCF:
At Zion Lutheran Preschool, the Christian Studies Curriculum Framework is tailored to fit a preschool context through having a guiding concept each term. In Term 2, the concept was Creation. Learners engaged with the Creation story through the use of loose parts, enabling them to create, reflect, play, and explore in a hands-on and imaginative way.
During Christian Studies lessons at Calvary Lutheran Primary School, Junior Primary learners have been engaging with Bible stories through Godly Play, a Montessori-inspired method. This approach encourages learners to co-construct their understanding by asking wondering questions as they listen. Following the storytelling, learners are invited to respond in ways that reflect their personal interests, helping them to make sense of their own learning.
Staff at St. Paul Lutheran School recently engaged in collaborative planning meetings to develop their Term 3 Christian Studies units of learning. From brainstorming learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom to developing assessment tasks that explicitly focus on the content and cognitive verbs of the learning statements, teachers were focused on creating learning that was not only reflective of the CSCF, but also fosters deep connections to God and all creation.
