Vale Peter Moeck

Peter Moeck’s contribution to Lutheran education extended far beyond the design of buildings. Through his vision, collaborative spirit and deep understanding of how people learn, he helped create learning communities that encapsulated and expressed the Lutheran commitment to nurture the whole person to become relational, purposeful, compassionate and adventurous.

Peter’s work with Lutheran schools over the last 30 years, particularly Cornerstone College and other educational projects across South Australia, reflected an understanding that learning is collaborative and relational. The spaces he designed encouraged interaction, creativity and shared inquiry. He envisioned learning environments that supported connection between students, teachers and the wider community. In doing so, he helped Lutheran schools move towards contemporary models of teaching and learning while remaining grounded in our Lutheran identity.

Peter had a strong belief that architecture should be “about people.” His approach centred on listening carefully to educators, students and community members, ensuring that learning spaces reflected the values and aspirations of those who used them.

Peter was generous, humble and committed to supporting others. He also had a genuine appreciation and heart for First Nations people, their culture and deep connection to Country. He took the time to listen, learn and understand, and those influences found their way into many of his projects. He believed that good architecture should reflect the people, the place and the story of the land.

Peter Moeck’s legacy will remain visible in the places he designed and the people he influenced. His work reminds us that learning communities flourish when they are intentionally created to support belonging, collaboration and purpose.

Peter died on Sunday 28 June after a short battle with cancer and his funeral was held on Monday 20 July.
