A Special Retreat

In my role as Spiritual and Cultural Leader, I am privileged to participate in a variety of exciting experiences. One of my highlights though, is the annual retreat with the secondary school chaplains and pastors at the Sevenhill Centre of Ignatian Spirituality which I got to enjoy again last week.

There are a number of reasons why this retreat is so special for me. One of them is the special location. Set in the beautiful Clare Valley during spring when the grass is green, the dams are near full, the vines are about to burst into bud, and the chilly nights are perfect for sitting around the open fireplace. The rustic old buildings also add to the charm.

A second reason is the special company. Having a background as a college pastor, I find great joy in the mutual storytelling with chaplains and pastors. Every year the emotions range from laughter to tears, but there is always a sense of genuine comradery, support and encouragement.

Most importantly, the retreat enables me to take a special amount of time in personal spiritual reflection. It provides me the opportunity to, ‘be still and know that I am God’ (Psalm 46:10). While I usually have multiple opportunities to spend time with God during the week, this annual set of days gives time and space to be more open in my reflection and listening to what God is speaking to me.

As this semester draws to a close and we soon enter the semester break, may you be able to enjoy some special locations and times with some special people. In that, may you be reminded of the many special ways in which God has blessed you, and may that draw you to share some special words with him.
