Story from the Field

Supporting leadership growth and systemic wellbeing can be challenging in a remote ELC–Year 12 learning community – particularly when access to centralised professional learning is limited by distance.

Navigator College is exploring a different approach through the NC Leadership Lab, a series of workshops across the year that support staff to grow their leadership capability through the real projects they are already working on.

The design of the Leadership Lab is shaped by a few key principles:

  • leadership growth and wellbeing are a shared responsibility, not limited to those with formal titles
  • access and agency matter, with learning open to all staff, including non‑teaching staff
  • professional learning happens during work hours, not after school
  • creative solutions are used to release staff, despite a limited pool of relievers

One of the strengths of this work has been the diversity of participants. The group brings together staff from across the learning community, including business operations, wellbeing, IT, OSHC, VET and careers, and curriculum leadership – learning with and from one another.

The deep engagement of the first cohort suggests this work has the potential to support meaningful growth at a personal, team and organisational level, creating the conditions for all staff to be free to flourish.
