ALWS: Let’s Step Out so a Child can Step Up

Education is one of the most powerful ways to lift people out of poverty. It changes lives and improves the livelihoods of entire communities.

As a teacher, you get to see the positive impact of education on the students you teach. You get to witness the way schooling grows a child’s emotional and cognitive abilities… how it helps them to thrive.

Sadly, for millions of children worldwide, the dream of going to school remains just that—a dream. For over 250 million out-of-school children (UNESCO, 2023), schooling remains out of reach due to conflict, poverty, or a lack of resources.

It can be easy to take education for granted here in Adelaide when we don’t need to worry about conflict or poverty. Australian classrooms are equipped with the resources and support systems that allow children to thrive, even if they are doing it tough at home. However, in so many parts of the world, education is not a right or a priority at all. Girls specifically, face significant barriers to education, often due to cultural norms, poverty, and the lack of access to safe schools… and it’s through no fault of their own.

To celebrate our 75th birthday, with your help, we hope to make schooling possible for more children impacted by war and poverty. Our goal is to support 75,000 children with the essentials for a happy, healthy life; food, shelter and especially schooling! YOU can help make this possible!

Our Adelaide Walk My Way fundraiser is being held on Saturday 3 May at Australian Lutheran College (ALC) in North Adelaide, where we will be stepping out as a Lutheran community together- for 3km or 10km.

ALWS will be hosting a community hub at the starting line with food stalls, wine tastings, live entertainment, kids games and lots and lots of Lutheran fellowship. Truly something for everyone!

We are inviting all teachers, students, parents, and church community members to participate in our Adelaide walkathon so that children, in some of the world’s most impoverished regions, can take the steps they need to go to school. Each step you take will bring us closer to providing a vulnerable child with the opportunities they need to live a happy, healthy life.

When you register for Walk My Way, you are joining a cause that’s bigger than all of us. You’ll help raise funds that will be used to provide community education about the rights of children, brain-food for student’s bellies, and essential resources, like teachers and books, for children in countries where education is a luxury. Your funds will also help assist local families with securing food and shelter through sustainable livelihood assistance.

This fundraiser is more than just a walk—it’s a chance to stand up for the rights of children- to break down the barriers they face, and to help open doors to brighter futures. Every dollar raised will go directly to providing life-changing educational opportunities for children in countries that ALWS work in, including Burundi, Kenya, South Sudan and the Ukraine.

But teachers… we need you.

We know that teachers are the heart of any school community, and your involvement can make all the difference. Here’s how you can participate and inspire others to do the same:

  1. Register Your School for Walk My Way Adelaide: Sign up your school to participate in the Walk My Way event. Create a team page for your school! Encourage your students to get involved and raise awareness about the importance of education for all children. It’s a fun way to get inter-school competition going…
  2. Grow compassion: You have a special opportunity to connect students with communities in need. You can talk to your students about the importance of compassion and global citizenship. Share stories of children who, with the support of donors like you, are able to attend school and break the cycle of poverty. Use this as a learning opportunity to discuss the global importance of education.

Together, as a community, we can send a message of compassion, empathy, and hope to children in need. Let’s inspire our students to walk with purpose and show them that even small actions can lead to big changes.

With your help, we can create a world where every child—no matter where they are born—has access to the life-changing gift of education.
