ECEC Project Update

In August 2024, LESNW engaged Barbara Murray to lead a strategic review of early childhood education and care across South Australia, the Northern Territory, and Western Australia. The research examined how services—including kindergartens, childcare, early learning, and out-of-school-hours care (OSHC)—align with emerging trends and identified key opportunities for improvement. The resulting report, endorsed by the LESNW Board in February 2025, provided a clear roadmap for strengthening early years education and positioning it for long-term growth and sustainability.

To support the implementation of these recommendations, Barb was appointed on a part-time basis throughout 2025 and has worked closely with the LESNW team to advance priority objectives and lay the foundation for a dedicated Director of Early Years, scheduled to be appointed in 2026.

Significant progress has already been achieved. Barb has facilitated mentoring and planning sessions, supported leaders, assisted with grant applications, refined policies, and participated in site visits, board meetings, and collaborative workshops. Although Barb’s initial contract was set to conclude at the end of this year, the ongoing nature of the work and evolving needs have led to an extension of her consultancy into 2026, pending confirmation.
