The Way of the Lutherans
Der Weg der Lutheraner
Daily Routine
The Way of the Lutherans is a seven-day walking pilgrimage, covering nearly 150km in total. Each day includes walking distances ranging from 12km to 27km, across a variety of terrains.
Luggage and Daily Essentials
Pilgrims carry a day pack with essentials needed for the day, while their main luggage (one bag or suitcase, up to 20kg) is transported by a support minibus and trailer.
Meals and Refreshments
Breakfast, morning tea, and lunch are provided each day. The minibus meets the group at designated points during the walk to serve morning tea and lunch, and to allow pilgrims to refill water bottles and collect extra snacks.
Dinner and beverages are at each pilgrim’s own expense and are typically enjoyed at local restaurants. The minibus will provide transport to and from dinner venues if they’re not within walking distance.
Support and Transport
At the end of each day, the minibus transports pilgrims back to their accommodation. If a pilgrim is unable to complete a day’s walk, the support vehicle is available to transport them directly to the accommodation.
Trail Navigation and Storytelling
Each day, the Pilgrim Leader shares trail maps via the AllTrails app, which include key waypoints such as public toilet locations. At significant historical sites, pilgrims receive access to video stories that bring to life the experiences of early Lutheran migrants.
Toilet Access
Each day, pilgrims will rely on public toilets along the route. While the Pilgrim Leader shares toilet locations via the AllTrails app, there will be large stretches—and on some days, potentially the entire walking day—without access to public facilities. Pilgrims should be prepared for limited facilities and may need to use bush toileting in remote areas. Basic hygiene items are recommended, and pilgrims are encouraged to follow Leave No Trace principles to care for the environment and respect fellow walkers.
Technology Requirements
To fully participate, pilgrims should begin each day with a fully charged smartphone capable of receiving email and accessing WhatsApp via mobile signal as public Wi-Fi is not guaranteed. A portable power bank and small earphones or earbuds are also recommended.
Start and Finish Points
The pilgrimage begins and ends at Immanuel Lutheran Church, North Adelaide. On Day 1, we gather at 9.00am for opening worship and orientation. On Day 8, we return to the same location by 4.00pm.
