Storytelling Reimagined: The Way of the Lutherans

In a year where the pace of life is high, The Way of the Lutherans invites us to slow down and step into something different.

What began as a vision to capture our history has evolved into a landmark initiative for our region. This year, we are officially launching this eight-day, 150 km pilgrimage — a project that transforms our heritage into a living, breathing resource for personal and professional formation.

The journey begins at Pirltawardli, the site of the first Australian Lutheran school for Indigenous children, and concludes at Gnadenberg Lutheran Church in the Barossa Valley. To walk this path is to literally trace the footsteps of the early migrants who established our first schools and churches.

But the truly exciting part is how this story is being told. Stuart Traeger has spent months meticulously mapping this trail and producing a suite of immersive resources—including location-specific videos and digital maps—that act like a mobile museum. As you reach each site of spiritual significance, the stories of courage and faith are brought to life right where they happened. It is a lasting resource that ensures our history is not just remembered, but experienced.

As our inaugural pilgrims discovered, the physical challenge of the walk—the blisters, the sore legs, and the shared support—creates a rare space for personal growth and deep connection with colleagues. It invites us to reflect on how we can be adventurous, compassionate, purposeful, and relational in our own missions today.

Whether we are walking the 150 km trail or engaging with these stories in our own learning communities, The Way of the Lutherans is a reminder that our story is not just a legacy to remember—it is a pathway we can walk together.
